General Ramms Situational Awareness Trip to Afghanistan

During the final week of October, General Egon Ramms, Commander Joint Force Command Brunssum, conducted one of his regulalry scheduled visits to Afghanistan accompanied by a Dutch journalist from daily newspaper the 'Volkskrant'.

The first leg of General Ramms' visit included a stop in Kabul to meet with the representatives from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA), International Organizations as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and several members of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

General Ramms spoke with the Afghan Chief of Defence, GIRoA officials and visited the Governmental Media Information Centre.

To underline the important relation between UNAMA and ISAF, General Ramms met with Mr. Kai Eide, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General and General Ramms had the opportunity to visit two embassies.

While visiting the ISAF Headquarters, General Ramms spoke with Commander United States Central Command General David Petraeus, and ISAF Commander General Stanley A. McChrystal. General Ramms also received updates on the latest developments regarding the NATO Training Mission Afghanistan (NTM-A) and visited the recently established ISAF Joint Force Command at the Kabul International Airport.

The second part of General Ramms' visit included stops at units in Bagram and Pansjhir Province providing the General with a good view on the tactical results in these provinces. In Pansjhir, the General visited two projects; a new hospital for a remote village and a micro hydro-electric generator that provides power for a local village. He also visited a local market.

The General's visit ended with a background interview with the Associated Press, El Mundo, Stern Magazine and the Volkskrant.
