General Egon Ramms was born in Datteln, Westphalia on September 21st, 1948.
He joined the Bundeswehr on October 1st, 1968 as officer
candidate and temporary career volunteer for 3 years, serving
at first in the Unna-based Maintenance Battalion 470. From
1968 to 1971 General Ramms started his officer education
and training in Aachen and Hannover. In 1971 he began academic
studies in Darmstadt, from which he graduated as a Bachelor
of Engineering for Mechanical Engineering in 1975, specialty:
automotive engineering and tank engineering. In 1975 General
Ramms served as the maintenance officer in Maintenance Company
70 based in Stade/Elbe and from 1975 to 1978 he was assigned
as Commander of this unit. From 1978 to 1980 General Ramms
continued his military service as the maintenance officer
in G4 of Headquarters 3rd Armoured Division in Buxtehude.
The following two years General Ramms spent at the General
Staff Training in Hamburg. From 1982 to 1984 he served in
G3 Ops in 6th Armoured Inf Div in Neumünster and then for
two years as Chief of Staff and G3 in Home Defense Brigade
51 in Eutin. From 1986 to 1988 he was the Assistant Chief
of Branch, Arms Control and Disarmament in the Federal Ministry
of Defence, Armed Forces Staff III 5. For the next two years
General Ramms took the command of Maintenance Battalion
120 in Rheine. General Ramms returned to the Ministry of
Defence as the Assistant Chief of Branch in Army Staff I
7 in 1990. For the next two years General Ramms was the
Assistant Chief of Branch in the office of the State Secretary
for Procurement. In this position he was responsible for
army and air force armament and logistics. From 1992 to
1994 General Ramms became a member of the office of State
Secretary Schönbohm as the Director of Armament Section.
In 1994 he was appointed as the Chief of the Central Branch
in the Army Staff of Ministry of Defence. In 1996 General
Ramms took over the command of Logistic Brigade 1 in Lingen/Ems
for the next two and a half years. In 1998 General Ramms
became Deputy Chief of Staff, Armed Forces Staff V, Logistics,
Infrastructure, and Environmental Protection in the German
Armed Forces. This was followed by his assignment as Director
of Armed Forces Staff, Ministry of Defence, commencing 2000,
from where he was assigned as Commander to the Multinational
Corps Northeast on February 2004. General Ramms took up
his current post as Commander Allied Joint Force Command
Brunssum on 26th January 2007.
General Ramms is married to Brigitte; they have two children. His hobbies are classical music, golf and literature.
